Materials List for Befriending Our Shadow E-Course

  • cotton fabric for bodies and arms-patterned or plain, skin colored or bright colors depending on what you choose. If you don’t have a stash of cotton or other fabric, you can use fabric repurposed from clothing or napkins. Best to use plain colors for face and arms, and patterned for bodies.
  • thread and needles for sewing (or a sewing machine)-this is regular sewing thread for attaching doll parts together and sewing doll and arm bodies together
  • embroidery floss-DMC 25 is good, can separate into individual strands or use double, this is for embellishing the face, body or skirt-this kind of thread is brighter and looks better for thread that can be seen
  • scissors fabric scissors are best ( also helpful to have paper scissors for making the paper patterns etc)
  • drawing materials for making paper patterns, including, paper, pen, pencil, cardboard, glue
  • quilt batting for supporting layer when embellishing the face, body or skirt, about a yard, Joanne Fabric or most fabric supply stores, synthetic is cheaper but it quilt batting with cotton works better
  • sewing pins for holding fabric pieces in place
  • buttons for attaching arms, two holed buttons are easier to work with
  • stuffing materials -fiber-fill, alternately you can use dried beans, straw, fabric scraps, or even lavender,  if you want to add a nice scent to your doll
  • stuffing stick-can use chop stick, helpful for turning doll outside in, and also for stuffing fiber fill or other stuffing into the doll body or arms

Optional:

  • photo transfer papers for faces, here is a link for a photo transfer paper from Joanne fabric that is cool because it has both dark and light transfer paper https://www.joann.com/jolees-easy-image-transfer-sheets-8.5inx11in-10-pkg-for-lightdark-fabrics/12638227.html#start=1
  • light box for tracing designs, can use window instead
  • tracing paper-one way of tracing an image onto darker fabric for stitching after. Here is a link to a tutorial on some methods of transferring images onto paper. http://www.badasscrossstitch.com/tutorials/how-to-transfer-embroidery-patterns-to-your-fabric
  • fabric markers
  • water based crayons such as Cara D’ache II. Note these are not permanent and will wash off if it gets wet. You can also try oil based crayons
